HamiltonLocated over both sides of the mighty Waikato River, Hamilton, or Kirikiriroa, (long stretch of gravel – referring to the river at this location) is the centre for commerce and industry for the Waikato region. Hamilton’s multi-cultural diversity is reflected in the strong presence of the Tainui Iwi, the history of European settlement and the influx of students to the University of Waikato and the Waikato Institute of Technology from all over the world. With a population of 114,921 people in the last census in 2001, Hamilton is bursting with development in agricultural technology and research, lifestyle, and industry. The sights include the international theme gardens at Hamilton Gardens, the Zoo with its free flight aviary, the Waikato River itself and the many things to do, including an active and vibrant nightlife so good that Aucklanders visit here for it. Hamilton is home to the jet boat, the Waipa Delta and the Mighty Chiefs, supported by the mooloo bell rung loud and proud. The Waikato region itself is famous for its dairy production. The districts that make up the Waikato Region include Franklin, Otorohanga, Waitomo, Hauraki, Matamata-Piako, Waipa, South Waikato, Thames-Coromandel and Taupo Districts, all of which steeped in history and rich in resources.
